Digital for Planet at EU-Japan Digital Week 2026: Advancing Sustainable Digital Innovation

From 23 to 30 March 2026, Tokyo will host the second edition of EU-Japan Digital Week, bringing together policymakers, researchers, industry representatives, and innovators from Europe, Japan, and the wider Indo-Pacific region. The event serves as a key platform for strengthening cooperation under the EU–Japan Digital Partnership and exploring how emerging digital technologies can support a secure, resilient, and human-centric digital future.

Digital for Planet will be represented by its President and Founder, Dr. Monique Calisti, who will contribute to discussions on sustainable digital innovation and the role of advanced technologies in supporting environmental sustainability and societal well-being.

Strengthening EU–Japan digital cooperation

EU-Japan Digital Week has quickly become a central meeting point for dialogue between Europe and Japan on technology policy, research collaboration, and innovation. The first edition, held in 2025, gathered more than 400 participants from government, academia, and industry to discuss topics such as smart connectivity, policy, data spaces, and trustworthy artificial intelligence.

The 2026 programme expands this dialogue by focusing on emerging and disruptive technologies, including artificial intelligence, semiconductors, quantum computing, and high-performance computing (HPC). Sessions throughout the week will examine issues such as digital infrastructure resilience, international standards, and cross-border interoperability, while encouraging stronger research partnerships between European and Japanese stakeholders.

Collaboration across technology and policy

The programme features a wide range of workshops, roundtables, and discussions addressing the technological and policy dimensions of digital transformation.

The event will begin with a pre-week hackathon on the interoperability of digital public infrastructure, where teams from Europe, Japan, and the Indo-Pacific will work on solutions connecting digital identity systems and enabling trusted cross-border data exchange.

Several sessions will explore cooperation on emerging technologies and innovation ecosystems, including workshops on semiconductor value chains, policy dialogues on emerging and disruptive technologies, and exchanges between European and Japanese technology companies exploring opportunities for joint market development.

Other highlights include discussions on Japan’s association to Horizon Europe, as well as a closed ICT Stakeholder Roundtable organised by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications. The week will conclude with a panel on digital and technology diplomacy hosted at the Delegation of the European Union to Japan, examining how international partnerships can address the challenges of an increasingly technology-driven world.

AI4Good cooperation for climate and health

Among the key sessions of the week is the workshop “EU-Japan AI4Good cooperation: “Leveraging Extreme-Scale Computing for Societal Challenges”

The session will explore how collaboration between leading supercomputing infrastructures can support artificial intelligence applications addressing major societal challenges, including climate change, public health, and sustainable urban development.

During the event, Monique will present “Environmental and Societal Sustainability: Challenges and Priorities,” highlighting the role that responsible digital innovation can play in supporting sustainable development and environmental protection. The workshop will also showcase collaboration between leading high-performance computing infrastructures in Europe and Japan, including systems operated by RIKEN, Forschungszentrum Jülich, and the National Academic Infrastructure for Supercomputing in Sweden.

These infrastructures represent complementary capabilities in extreme-scale computing and AI-driven research, creating new opportunities for joint scientific projects.
