Digital for Planet at EBDVF 2025: Advancing Sustainable Digital Innovation in Copenhagen

Digital for Planet participated in the 2025 European Big Data Value Forum (EBDVF) in Copenhagen on 12-14 November, joining Europe’s leading data and AI research and innovation community under the theme “Empowering Europe’s Future with AI and Data”. As a hub for digital sustainability, Digital for Planet engaged strategically with sessions that align with its mission to advance environmental conservation through ethical digital technologies while fostering equitable socio-economic progress.

This participation was made possible through Digital for Planet’s role as a partner in the EU-funded project CERTAIN, with representation by Rafael Rodrigues, Technical Project Manager at Digital for Planet.

Driving Europe’s Digital Competitiveness and Industrial Transformation

Digital for Planet’s participation focused on two complementary tracks. The first centred on Europe’s digital competitiveness and industrial transformation, attending the industrial roundtable on “The present and future of Industrial AI in Europe” and the plenary session “Data at the centre of Europe’s digital competitiveness and autonomy”.

With the CERTAIN project, Rafael contributed to discussions on how robust frameworks can support Europe’s digital autonomy, bringing forward insights aligned with CERTAIN’s compliance-by-design vision.

The second track reflected Digital for Planet’s core sustainability commitment, with active participation in sessions addressing the intersection of data, AI, and environmental challenges. These included “Harnessing Data and AI for the Future of Agriculture,” “Foundations for an AI-Data-Driven Energy Future”, and the innovative “AI Factories, Data Labs and Data Spaces” sessions exploring how these ecosystems can be integrated to support Europe’s strategic sustainability objectives. Digital for Planet also engaged with project initiatives such as the EMERALDS approach to extreme-scale urban mobility data analytics, the IDEATION and AquaINFRA projects supporting the EU Digital Twin Ocean, and critical discussions on semantics and compliance for enabling trustworthy data and AI in European data spaces, being a speaker at this session in cooperation with sister projects at DICE Alliance.

CERTAIN’s Contribution: Enabling Trustworthy Data & AI

In this session Semantics & Compliance: Enabling Trustworthy Data/AI in European Data Spaces,” CERTAIN presented its approach to semantic compliance alongside fellow DICE Alliance partners, DataPACTACHILLES, and ACCOMPLISH. Rafael contributed to showcasing CERTAIN’s methods for translating legal and ethical requirements into technical implementations through ontologies, compliance-by-design methodologies, and its Semantic ML Engine.

Through this comprehensive engagement, Digital for Planet reinforced its role as a strategic partner for organisations navigating the twin green and digital transition, championing sustainable and ethical digital technologies that protect our planet while driving innovation across Europe!
