While human-induced climate change has been affecting many weather and climate extremes across the globe for years, scientists continue to observe new worrisome changes across the Earth’s climate system: in the atmosphere, oceans, ice floes, and on land. According to the latest INTERGOVERNMENTAL PANEL ON CLIMATE CHANGE (IPCC) report, climate change is widespread, rapid, and intensifying, and some trends are now considered irreversible for centuries to millennia ahead.
On July 14, 2021, the European Commission adopted a package of proposals to make the EU’s climate, energy, land use, transport, and taxation policies fit for a 55% reduction of net greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, as compared to 1990 levels. Achieving such a significant reduction of emissions in the next decade is crucial in light of Europe’s ambition to become the world’s first climate-neutral continent by 2050.
The European Climate Pact, officially launched on December 16, 2020, aims to revolutionize the approach to climate action by connecting individuals and organizations from different walks of life who share the goal of building a greener Europe.
Following the adoption of Horizon Europe Work Programme for the years 2021-2022, the first calls for proposals were launched on June 22, 2021. A substantial part of the funding, €14.7 billion, has been allocated to help accelerate the twin green and digital transitions, contribute to sustainable recovery from the coronavirus pandemic and build EU resilience against future crises.
