Abstract: Internet pollution, or the impact of the Internet on ecology is simply pollution caused by its operation. For many, the Internet is synonymous with dematerialisation. Yet, far from being dematerialized, the Internet is based on a physical infrastructure. Indeed, a whole network of cables, data centers and servers underpin the functioning of the Internet. Internet energy and carbon footprint are estimated to exceed those of travel.

Abstract: According to GreenIT, in 2019 the world’s digital industry will consume five times more natural resources than the French car fleet. And its impact could double by 2025 if current projections are to be believed, jeopardising the ambitions of our essential ecological transition. How can we, at our level, make better use of digital media to reduce our impact on the environment?

Abstract: Digitalization as a technological phenomenon of the 21st century has the power to redeem most environmental sins
of our 20th century technology. This seems to be a popular belief shining through many of the optimistic media reports on
digitalization. We believe, however, that this mindset is far too simplistic and counterproductive.
