Zero Pollution Communication Networks
By integrating space, aerial, terrestrial, and undersea, Next Generation Smart Networks will support more pervasive and resilient communication. The ambition is to provide ubiquitous and unlimited connectivity to a massive number of devices and sensors with diverse quality of service requirements, supporting large and heterogeneous traffic demands. At the same time, it is crucial to reduce energy consumption through the use of highly energy-efficient communication protocols, transceivers and computing technologies. This is an ambitious and challenging goal.
Looking at future communication networks, out of several innovations 6G is targeting, Digital for Planet is committed to reducing the overall energy consumption and operational costs from an environmental viewpoint. This includes several research and innovation initiatives which explore concepts and mechanisms helping eliminate the need for separate charging of heterogeneous devices by combining energy-efficient communication, energy harvesting/power transfer techniques, and offloading of energy-intensive processing from the edge devices to the edge- and cloud-servers.
There are several challenges associated with this, particularly given the scale at which communication networks’ diversity and complexity are increasing. In this regard, a combination of technological innovation and responsible governance is the most effective approach for significantly progressing toward zero pollution communication networks.
