Every day, we send emails, exchange messages, stream music and films, search the internet, post photos and videos, and store more data in the cloud. More recently, artificial intelligence has also become part of our daily digital lives.
All these activities rely on a growing digital ecosystem made up of devices, networks, servers, data centres and telecommunications infrastructure. As our use of digital technology grows, so does the energy and resource consumption linked to it.
A new report to rethink our digital habits
Digital for Planet has released a new report, Rethinking our Digital Habits, to help people better understand the environmental impact of their digital behaviour and take practical steps to reduce it.
The report builds on Digital for Planet’s 2020 white paper, Re-think your Digital Habits, and offers updated guidance for a world where digital tools are even more present in our homes, workplaces and daily routines. It brings together simple, evidence-based tips that can help individuals make their digital lives more sustainable, without giving up the benefits of technology.
Small changes can make digital life more sustainable
Becoming aware of the impact our digital behaviour can have on the environment is the first step to changing our habits. Just as many people have adopted more sustainable choices in other areas of life, such as using reusable bags or reducing single-use plastics, we can also make more conscious choices in the way we use digital tools.
The Digital for Planet report focuses on three key areas: extending the lifespan of our devices, reducing the energy consumption of our devices, and rethinking our online behaviour. These areas cover practical actions such as keeping devices for longer, using settings more efficiently, managing cloud storage, being more mindful about streaming, and reducing unnecessary data use.
A shared responsibility
While public authorities, governments and companies have a major role to play in driving systemic change, individual action also matters. More conscious digital habits, adopted at home and at work, can contribute to a more sustainable digital transition.
Start with your own digital habits
With Rethinking our Digital Habits, Digital for Planet invites readers to take a closer look at their digital footprint and start with small, realistic changes. A greener digital life does not mean disconnecting. It means using technology more thoughtfully, so that it better serves both people and the planet.
