Shaping a Sustainable Digital Future: Digital for Planet at EU-Japan Digital Week 2025

Digital for Planet was proud to participate in the EU-Japan Digital Week 2025, held from 31 March to 7 April in Tokyo, Japan. Organised under the EU-Japan Digital Partnership, the event brought together policymakers, industry leaders and researchers to advance collaboration on critical digital technologies, from 6G and cloud-edge computing to AI and data spaces.

Driving Sustainable and Ethical Digital Innovation

Aligned with our mission to advance sustainable and ethical digital technologies, Digital for Planet actively contributed throughout the week. Dr. Monique Calisti, Digital for Planet’s President and Founder, moderated key sessions, while Anita Gojanovic, Community Building and Communication Expert, supported engagement, outreach, and knowledge-sharing across all workshops.

Workshop Highlights

  1. Smart Connectivity and Computing (31 March)
The week began with the “Smart Connectivity and Computing” Workshop, focusing on bridging EU-Japan collaboration in cloud-edge computing. Monique was moderator of a key session on Advancing Cloud-Edge Computing Through Cross-Cutting Innovations, bringing together key experts for a panel discussion on advancing cloud-edge computing through cross-cutting innovations. During another session about the EU-Japan Nexus, Monique delivered key insights in a panel discussion on policies, initiatives, and funding mechanisms that drive collaborations and connections in cloud-edge computing and smart connectivity.

  2. 6G Horizons: Synergies for a Connected Future (1 April)
During this workshop, Digital for Planet showcased two Horizon Europe projects – INPACE and 6G4Society. Discussions highlighted global collaboration on next-generation mobile networks, AI-native 6G systems, and sustainable connectivity.

  3. Closed-Door Policy Workshop: The EU-Japan Digital Partnership (2 April)
This high-level workshop brought together EU and Japanese policymakers, academia, and industry leaders to address governance and policy alignment in emerging technologies such as AI, quantum computing, and advanced semiconductors.

  4. Trusted Data Exchanges: From Standards to Pilots (2 April)
The workshop examined practical implementation of secure, interoperable data exchanges. Participants explored EU-Japan approaches to digital identity, semantic interoperability, and policy frameworks supporting cross-border data flows. The session also highlighted pilot projects and open standards initiatives that promote ethical, transparent, and sustainable data ecosystems.

  5. Data Spaces – or the Story How to Make Business from Data in a Legal Fashion (3-4 April)
The workshop explored the EU Digital Product Passport (DPP) legal framework, interoperability challenges, and practical strategies for cross-border collaboration. Participants gained hands-on insights for designing joint EU-Japan data space pilots and fostering circular, low-carbon economies. Monique moderated a key session exploring how data spaces drive value creation, unlocking real market opportunities across diverse industries, including textiles, batteries, automotive, and telco.

  6. Critical Applications of AI in Industry, Healthcare and Other Sectors (7 April)
The workshop focused on safe, reliable AI applications in critical sectors. Discussions covered AI for industrial automation, transportation, and healthcare, emphasising ethical deployment, safety assurance, and sustainability. The session also highlighted opportunities for EU-Japan collaboration on responsible AI development aligned with environmental and societal impact goals.

Driving Global Digital Collaboration

EU-Japan Digital Week 2025 reinforced the power of international collaboration and contributed to a more connected, innovative, and sustainable digital future. By engaging in high-level discussions and hands-on workshops, Digital for Planet strengthened its mission to integrate environmental and societal priorities into the design and deployment of emerging digital technologies.

About INPACE

INPACE is a Horizon Europe Coordination and Support Action that supports the implementation of Digital Partnerships between the European Union and Japan, South Korea, Singapore, as well as the Trade and Technology Council with India. Launched in January 2024, INPACE brings together 21 European and Asian organisations to establish a multi-stakeholder Hub for collaboration in digital technologies. The initiative fosters long-term cooperation between Europe and the Indo-Pacific in key digital technologies by bringing together experts and stakeholders from both regions
