Digital Sustainability
Digital sustainability is an ecosystem and like any ecosystem, it needs both pollinators (innovators and citizens) and gardeners (societal & policy shapers and system integrators). At Digital for Planet (D4P), we are both.
At D4P, we champion digital sustainability by harnessing ethical digital technologies to drive environmental regeneration, social equity, and economic progress across Europe and beyond. Our expertise lies in leveraging cutting-edge digital tools—such as AI, IoT, cloud and edge computing, swarm intelligence, and blockchain—to create sustainable, inclusive, and resilient systems. By integrating our hands-on experience across the environmental, social, and economic dimensions of sustainability, alongside our expertise from the social sciences and humanities (SSH), we ensure that digital innovation aligns with environmental conservation, ethical principles, and socio-economic needs
Why it matters?
Striving for a twin green digital transition is essential, but why and how? Digital transformation can increase energy consumption and e-waste. Yet, it can also promote a more circular economy and help identify new sustainable solutions
We should ensure that digital transition fosters positive and sustainable social progress. How? Digital sustainability should be about harnessing technology to improve people’s lives and foster a more inclusive and equitable future for everyone. In a world buzzing with digital innovation, it is imperative that digital solutions integrate social sustainability into technological development and advancement.
Economic sustainability: using digital tools to tackle climate change involves optimising consumption, reducing emissions, and integrating environmental principles into technology design, usage, and recycling.
GREEN CLOUD-EDGE-IoT COMPUTING
Working Group
The Digital for Planet Green Cloud-Edge-IoT Computing Working Group focuses on measuring and improving Cloud-Edge-IoT energy and environmental footprint and identifying major challenges and priorities.
Activities:

Analysing, connecting, and participating in programmes to study and assess the footprint of the Cloud-Edge-IoT continuum.

Scouting, investigating, and proposing architecture, models, and technical solutions to reduce the footprint.

Assessing, discussing, developing, and proposing approaches and guidelines for policy development in the domain of sustainable and energy-efficient ICT.

Discussing, supporting, and promoting initiatives dealing with social, economic, and behavioural aspects of sustainable digital transformation.

Identifying and studying policy-driven and regulatory frameworks for sustainable Cloud-Edge-IoT development and usage, aiming to create liaisons with relevant stakeholders.
