AMALTEA Project Kicks Off: Pioneering Sustainability in Construction with Robotics, AI, and Digitalization

The AMALTEA project officially launched in January with a kick-off meeting held at TECNALIA’s headquarters in San Sebastián, Spain. This groundbreaking initiative brings together 15 partners from across Europe, united in their mission to revolutionize the construction sector by integrating robotics, artificial intelligence (AI), and advanced digital tools into façade design, manufacturing, installation, and recycling processes.

A Vision for a Sustainable Construction Sector

AMALTEA is poised to make significant strides toward improving the sustainability and digitalization of the construction industry, particularly within the curtain wall façade value chain. By leveraging cutting-edge technologies, the project supports the European Green Deal’s objectives and aims to enable net-zero energy consumption in new buildings by 2030, in line with EU energy-related standards.

Innovative Digital Solutions

At the heart of AMALTEA is a suite of transformative digital tools, including:

  • Parametric design and artificial intelligence for enhanced decision-making.
  • Digital twin technology for precise modeling and monitoring.
  • Advanced robotics for both on-site and off-site activities.
  • Artificial vision and advanced control systems to optimize processes.

These technologies will be integrated into tailored digital solutions across all phases of the façade value chain, from initial design to disassembly and recycling, ensuring a seamless and sustainable workflow.

Piloting Sustainability and Scalability

AMALTEA’s solutions will be validated through large-scale pilots:

  1. An industrial manufacturing site dedicated to façade production.
  2. Two real building deployments: one residential/hospital in Southern Europe and one office/tertiary building in Central Europe.
  3. A comprehensive digital validation of the entire façade value chain to ensure adaptability, safety, and sustainability.

Empowering SMEs Through Open Calls

To maximize the sector’s digitalization potential, AMALTEA will launch two Open Calls to engage over 20 SMEs and start-ups. These calls will enable external innovators to enhance the project’s digital solutions, driving technological advancement and fostering digital sovereignty in construction.

A Collaborative Effort Across Europe

The AMALTEA consortium is led by TECNALIA, with contributions from leading organizations: Lortek, University of Stuttgart, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, nLink, Teknopar, Siemens, Etcetera, FDB, ENAR, Acciona, Zublin, FundingBox, Digital for Planet, and Fasttrack.
