SUMMARY:High-level expert webinar: Internet Commons and Digital Sovereignty
DESCRIPTION:Digital Commons are among the core assets to pursue Europe’s Digital Sovereignty. Several initiatives and calls for actions are gaining traction\, striving to bring real benefits to individuals and organisations by ensuring open\, inclusive and decentralised access to digital resources in line with the core principles and action of the Next Generation Internet (NGI) Initiative. However\, in order to ensure that such approaches can grow and become viable alternatives over the current concentration of Internet resources\, it is crucial to pull resources. Therefore\, policymakers\, regulators\, public authorities and all other relevant players in the internet arena must converge to define collaboration policies and targeted institutional and financial plans to guarantee interoperability and community governance. \nThe main objectives of the webinar:\n \n\nDiscuss priorities for Europe to support an open\, free\, global\, interoperable\, reliable\, and secure Internet.\nExplore the latest evolution of Digital Commons initiatives and relevant European policy-driven efforts.\nDiscuss the role of the Next Generation Internet initiative as a way to foster Digital Commons and European Digital Sovereignty.\nIncrease collaboration among all European players at work on Internet Commons.\n\nThe webinar will be moderated by Dr Monique Calisti\, NGI Outreach Office Director.

SUMMARY:D4P's EU Green Week 2022 Partner Event
DESCRIPTION:EU Green Week is the annual opportunity to debate European environmental policy with policymakers\, leading environmentalists and stakeholders from Europe and beyond. This year’s EU Green Week 2022 theme is “EU Green Deal – Make it Real” and will focus on the European Green Deal – the EU’s sustainable and transformative growth strategy for a resource-efficient and climate-neutral Europe by 2050. \nAs part of the EU Green Week\, Digital for Planet will contribute to the debate by shedding light on the key role of digital technologies in achieving the European Green Deal goals in the workshop “Green Digital for Sustainable Transformation”. \nREGISTER NOW for free!\n“Green Digital for Sustainable Transformation” WORKSHOP\nIoT sensors and their data management provide better assessments and greener services in our cities. Videoconferencing from home offices cuts travel costs. Open-sourced platforms and applications improve the participation of people in the co-creation of more sustainable policies.  \nAll of these outcomes are wonderful but have we ever wondered about the negative impact these digital solutions have on our environment? To make Europe climate-neutral by 2050\, we need to ensure that digital technologies do not consume more energy than they save. At the moment\, the Information Communications and Technology (ICT) industry produces more than 830 million tons of carbon dioxide annually. That corresponds to about 4% of global CO2 emissions – twice as much as the commercial flights’ impact! This needs to change! \nDigital for Planet calls for organisations and individuals to join forces to advance green digital technologies that do not harm our planet. The Green Digital for Sustainable Transformation workshop will bring together top experts from the European Commission\, industry and academia to present and discuss solutions that will allow our society to harness green digital technologies and reach the European Green Deal objectives. \nWHY PARTICIPATE?\nThe D4P’s EU Green Week 2022 Partner Event will be an opportunity to: \n\nLiaise and network with top experts from the industry\, innovative SMEs\, academia\, NGOs\, and public authorities committed to advancing sustainable digital technologies.\nDiscuss and learn about cutting-edge solutions to harness green digital technologies in Europe.\n\nAGENDA\n10:30 – 10:40 Welcome and Introduction \n\nMonique Calisti\, President of Digital for Planet\n\n10:40 – 10:55 Setting the Framework EU Green Deal/Green Digital \n\nAlmut Nagel\, Policy officer – Green Digital Transformation\, European Commission\n\n10:55 – 11:35 Green Digital for Sustainable Transformation \n\nRahul Tomar\, Co-founder DigitalTwin Technology\nCristina Brandtstetter\, CMO FIWARE Foundation \nGiovanni Rimassa\, CIO Martel Innovate \n\n11:35 – 11:50 Panel Discussion  \n11:50 – 12:00 Wrap up\, Closing and Call to Action \n\nMonique Calisti\, President of Digital for Planet\n\nREGISTER NOW now

SUMMARY:Call for proposals: European Green Deal Data Space – Information session
DESCRIPTION:The European Commission – DG Connect and DG Environment – organises on 15th December 2021 an online session to provide information on the call for proposals under the Digital Europe prgramme to support the creation of a common. \nThis call for proposals has been launched on 17th November and is open until 22nd February 2022 (EU Funding & Tender Portal). \nThe Green Deal is one of the strategic domains of public interest identified in the European Data Strategy for which a common European Data Space will be created. The EU Data Strategy ultimately aims at establishing a Single EU Market for data\, where data can flow between countries and sectors and be accessed and used easily\, respecting European values and rules. \nThe common European Green Deal data space will interconnect currently fragmented and dispersed data from various ecosystems\, both for/from the private and public sectors\, to support the objectives of the European Green Deal. It will offer an interoperable\, trusted IT environment for data processing\, and a set of rules of legislative\, administrative\, and contractual nature that determine the rights of access to and use of the data. \nThe information session will present the Green Deal data space vision\, the DIGITAL call for proposals as well as parallel horizontal activities\, and it will provide a matchmaking opportunity for potential consortium partners. Participants will have the opportunity to make a 2 minutes pitch by signing up via the chat box. \nThe agenda and link to join the event are available here.

SUMMARY:Digital Enablers: The Future of Sustainability
DESCRIPTION:Join DIGITAL SME\, the European Commission\, GeSI\, and innovative SMEs at the launch of the Focus Group ICT Sustainability\nTurning Europe into a green and digital economy is a herculean task that rests on the shoulders of one group in particular: innovative “digital enabler” SMEs.  Digital enablers facilitate other businesses’ transition to more digital and sustainable business models. Many of these SMEs are sustainable-by-design\, maintaining a very small footprint or net-zero emissions in their own operations while “greening” other sectors with their solutions. \nNow Europe’s digital enablers have a new home: DIGITAL SME’s Focus Group ICT Sustainability (FGS)!  This new group will bring together SMEs that are 1) digital or digitally-based\, and 2) contribute to environmental sustainability. Starting today\, the Focus Group invites businesses that provide sustainable technology solutions and services to join its ranks. \nMore information about the agenda and how to attend here. \n

SUMMARY:Greening Internet Governance
DESCRIPTION:Over the past year\, the EuroDIG community has been addressing information and communications technology (ICT) sustainability and the crucial role of the Internet governance community in ensuring that environmental sustainability is at the heart of ICTs throughout their lifecycle. We are at a critical junction given the urgency of the topic coupled with a policy and regulatory environment that recognises the need for more concerted action vis-a-vis digitisation and sustainability – from the European Green Deal and the Sustainable Development Agenda\, to the post-COVID recovery plans and the Paris Climate Agreement. \nOne year later\, what has been achieved in Europe? What are the most prominent challenges? What else must be done to support all stakeholders in their respective roles towards greening Internet governance and the ICT ecosystem more broadly? What concrete commitments\, collaborations\, and plans for action are underway to develop rights-based and sustainable technologies as well as to ensure that technology is put in the service of solving the climate crisis and promoting environmental justice? \nThis session builds on EuroDIG 2020 Plenary 4: Greening Internet Governance to review the process made since EuroDIG 2020 and examine concrete achievements and feasible action plans for a sustainable ICT environment in the future\, particularly over the next decade in-line with the EU’s digital action plan and Green Deal strategies. It also constitutes the launch of the EuroDIG intersessional project\, Greening Internet Governance\, which will draw on the discussions had during this session to elaborate upon via concrete actions and recommendations over the coming period. \nMore information here

SUMMARY:Dawn of the Fair Data Economy
DESCRIPTION:The data economy is broken. We want to fix it. With you. \nFor three years\, we at Sitra\, with our partners and expert networks\, have been building a new alternative to the data economy in a project called IHAN® – the human-driven data economy. With the current data economy broken\, we wanted to create an alternative that is fair for all stakeholders – individuals\, businesses and society as a whole – and that is based on sustainability and European values.\nWe are pleased to invite you to our event on the fair data economy. The day will start with journalist\, author and speaker on all things digital Andreas Ekström calling on us to resist black-and-white thinking in his new keynote speech “The Power of AND”. \nFollowing Andreas\, we will explain our three-year journey as champions of fairer data business practices and data economy regulation as well as discuss data sovereignty and the role of individuals as active and valuable participants. Milestones\, results\, lessons learned and tools created during the project will all be showcased throughout the afternoon. \nImmediately after the outline of Sitra’s project\, a panel will explore a key element of a digital economy – trust. The distinguished panellists – Pekka Ala-Pietilä\, Risto Siilasmaa and Peter Vesterbacka – will no doubt offer many specific viewpoints on and examples of the value of trust in real business settings. \nMark Surman is thinking differently about power and data. He will talk about Mozilla’s mission and data economy from a new\, fairer\, perspective. He claims it is “the same game\, but new rules”. \nYes\, the data economy is broken and needs to be fixed. In conclusion and as a testament to project IHAN®’s social importance\, we will unveil Sitra’s new theme “The Fair Data Economy”. \nAll info about the event here

SUMMARY:Next Generation Internet Technologies for Green Digital Transformation
DESCRIPTION:The environmental cost of the Internet has been dramatically growing in recent years. The internet consumes electricity on end users’ devices\, in data centres and in communication networks that transfer data. According to recent studies\, the total electricity consumption of its infrastructure only (networks and data centres\, without consumer devices) is around 500 TWh per year that is 2.5% of worldwide electricity. Besides the negative impact due to the huge energy consumption\, the environmental footprint of the Internet also accounts for the production\, use and disposal of its infrastructure and the massive proliferation of connected things (25-50 billions by end of 2021!). \nNext generation internet technologies\, from core to access networks\, from the physical to the application layer\, must become greener\, both in the way they are developed and in the way they are deployed. This calls for all stakeholders to be engaged in redefining the way we use and consume internet technologies. This workshop will gather researchers and innovators that are at work to ensure transitioning to a safer\, better resilient and more sustainable internet. \nThe main objective of this workshop is to voice some of the most significant efforts within the NGI Community that through their work are paving the way to a greener Internet\, while advocating for an increased focus on understanding and studying the environmental footprint of Internet technologies \nSpeakers:\n\nDr. Loretta Anania\, European Commission\, Directorate-General for Communication Networks\, Content and Technology Next Generation Internet\nProf. Adrian Perrig\, ETHZ Zurich\, NGI Innovator\nChris Adams\, The Open Green Web\nDr. Giovanni Rimassa\, Digital for Planet\, NGI Ambassador\n\nModerator:\nDr. Monique Calisti\, Martel Innovate\, NGI Outreach Office\, NGI4ALL \nThis event will be part of THE NGI FORUM 2021. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row css_animation=”fadeInUp”][vc_column][vc_empty_space height=”22px”][vc_column_text css_animation=”fadeInUp”]The Sustainable Next Generation Internet Horizon Europe webinar aims to gather researchers\, innovators and policy makers that across a number of communities are at work to ensure the transition toward a green and sustainable internet that is resilient and inclusive.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”14px”][vc_column_text css_animation=”zoomIn” css=”.vc_custom_1616484643739{padding-top: 20px !important;padding-right: 20px !important;padding-bottom: 20px !important;padding-left: 20px !important;background-color: #eaeaea !important;border-radius: 20px !important;}”] \nThe main objective is to identify research and innovation challenges and opportunities in view of the upcoming Horizon Europe Calls.\n[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”14px”][vc_column_text css_animation=”fadeInUp”]With the increasing dependence on the internet for many professional and private aspects of our lives\, as exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic\, there is a clear need to transition towards a safer\, more resilient and better sustainable internet. When focusing on environmental aspects\, the internet already uses 9% of global energy\, a total that by some of the most extreme estimates could go up to as much as 23% of global greenhouse emissions by 2030. \nNext generation internet technologies\, from core to access networks\, from the physical to the application layer\, must become greener\, both in the way they are developed and in the way they are deployed. Reducing the CO2 footprint of the internet\, requires public and private organisations\, as well as individuals\, to become aware of the environmental impact social media\, online advertising\, and online streaming\, to mention some\, are already having. All stakeholders must be engaged in redefining the way we use and consume internet technologies to ensure the twin green digital transition will sustain and grow our economy and society in a sustainable way. \nThe Sustainable Next Generation Internet Horizon Europe webinar is gathering top experts from public authorities\, industry and academia to present and discuss how energy-efficient technologies\, mechanisms\, and policies must be put in place at several levels to ensure a safe\, resilient and sustainable Internet. \nRelevant Horizon Europe initiatives will be presented\, as well as concrete activities planned by the Digital for Planet – D4P Sustainable Next Generation Internet Working Group\, in preparation of upcoming Horizon Europe Calls.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”22px”][vc_btn title=”REGISTER NOW HERE” style=”flat” color=”green” size=”lg” align=”center” css_animation=”fadeInUp” button_block=”true” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fti.to%2Fmartel-innovate%2Fdigital-for-planet-webinar-sustainable-next-generation-internet-horizon-europe||target:%20_blank|”][vc_empty_space height=”42px”][vc_column_text css_animation=”fadeInUp”] \nAGENDA\n[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”22px”][vc_column_text css_animation=”none”]14:00h – 14:15h – Welcome and introduction to Digital for Planet – D4P[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css_animation=”fadeInUp”] \nDr Monique Calisti\,\nPresident D4P\, CEO Martel Innovate[/vc_column_text][vc_separator css=”.vc_custom_1614938147362{padding-top: 20px !important;}”][vc_empty_space height=”25px”][vc_column_text]14:15h – 14:45h – Keynote speaker\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css_animation=”fadeInUp”] \nDr Ilias Iakovidis\,\nAdviser\, Green Digital Transformation (European Commission)[/vc_column_text][vc_separator css=”.vc_custom_1614938147362{padding-top: 20px !important;}”][vc_empty_space height=”25px”][vc_column_text]15:45h – 15:55h – Research Challenges and Priorities – Expert Panel[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″][vc_column_text css_animation=”fadeInUp”] \nProf Leandro Navarro\, \nProfessor Department of Computer Architecture\, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″][vc_column_text css_animation=”fadeInUp”] \nDr Jan Bieser\, \nPostdoctoral Researcher\, University of Zurich and KTH\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″][vc_column_text css_animation=”fadeInUp”] \nProf Vlad Coroamă\,\nProfessor for Informatik\, ETH Zürich\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″][vc_column_text css_animation=”fadeInUp”] \nSimon Scherrer\, \nPhD Student\, Network Security Group\, ETH\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″][vc_column_text css_animation=”fadeInUp”] \nDr Ilias Iakovidis\,\nAdviser\, Green Digital Transformation (European Commission)[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″][vc_column_text css_animation=”fadeInUp”] \nRené Post\,\nFounder\, The Green Web Foundation[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_separator css=”.vc_custom_1614938147362{padding-top: 20px !important;}”][vc_empty_space height=”25px”][vc_column_text]15:45h – 15:55h – Sustainable Next-Generation Internet D4P Working Group\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css_animation=”fadeInUp”] \nDr Giovanni Rimassa\, \nVice President D4P\, CIO Martel Innovate\n[/vc_column_text][vc_separator css=”.vc_custom_1614938147362{padding-top: 20px !important;}”][vc_empty_space height=”25px”][vc_column_text]15:55h – 16:00h – Wrap-up and call to action[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css_animation=”fadeInUp”] \nDr Monique Calisti\,\nPresident D4P\, CEO Martel Innovate[/vc_column_text][vc_separator css=”.vc_custom_1614938147362{padding-top: 20px !important;}”][vc_empty_space height=”25px”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_btn title=”REGISTER NOW HERE” style=”flat” color=”green” size=”lg” align=”center” css_animation=”fadeInUp” button_block=”true” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fti.to%2Fmartel-innovate%2Fdigital-for-planet-webinar-sustainable-next-generation-internet-horizon-europe||target:%20_blank|”][vc_empty_space][vc_single_image image=”1169″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center” css_animation=”zoomIn”][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row]
