SUMMARY:2023 UN Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC COP 28)
DESCRIPTION:The 2023 UN Climate Change Conference will convene from 30 November to 12 December 2023 in Dubai\, United Arab Emirates (UAE). It will comprise: \n\n\n\n\nthe 28th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 28);\n\n\n\nthe fifth meeting of the COP serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Paris Agreement (CMA 5);\n\n\n\nthe 18th meeting of the COP serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP 18);\n\n\n\nthe 59th meeting of the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI 59); and\n\n\n\nthe 59th meeting of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA 59). \n\n\n\n\nIn a letter dated 13 January 2023\, the UNFCCC Secretariat announced that Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber\, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and UAE Special Envoy for Climate Change\, has been appointed to serve as COP 28 President-Designate. \n\n\n\nThe COP 27 Egyptian Presidency and the Incoming COP 28 Presidency are convening informal consultations to engage governments at the ministerial\, Head-of-Delegation\, and technical levels to lay the groundwork “to deliver a successful COP 28 that drives global transformation towards a low-emission and climate-resilient world\, fosters ambitious climate action and facilitates implementation\, including the related support”. \n\n\n\nThe first Global Stocktake of the implementation of the Paris Agreement will conclude at COP 28. Each stocktake is a two-year process that happens every five years\, with the aim of assessing the world’s collective progress towards achieving its climate goals. The first Global Stocktake takes place at the mid-point in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its SDGs\, including Goal 13 (climate action). It will be preceded by a mandated workshop on the elements of the outcome of the GST in October in the UAE. \n\n\n\nIn a letter to parties dated July 2023\, the Incoming Presidency announced that COP 28 will focus on four paradigm shifts: \n\n\n\n\nFast-tracking the energy transition and slashing emissions before 2030;\n\n\n\nTransforming climate finance\, by delivering on old promises and setting the framework for a new deal on finance;\n\n\n\nPutting nature\, people\, lives\, and livelihoods at the heart of climate action; and\n\n\n\nMobilizing for the most inclusive COP ever.\n\n\n\n\nThe letter also outlines a three-fold vision to course correct that includes a negotiated outcome\, an action agenda\, and a call to action. \n\n\n\nRead Earth Negotiations Bulletin (ENB) coverage of international climate negotiations here. \n\n\n\nRead SDG Knowledge Hub story about COP 27 outcomes here.

SUMMARY:SUSTAINABLE FUTURE WEEK - A SUMMIT FROM POLITICOLIVE
DESCRIPTION:For years\, politicians could talk safely about climate and energy targets. They were far enough in the future that it wouldn’t have an immediate impact on anyone’s life (or votes). But now those once-distant goals are going to happen very soon and that’s sparking an increasingly political reaction. \n\n\n\nIt’s all happening very fast. The last new combustion engine car will be sold in EU in only 11 years — that’s the blink of an eye for car company production cycles. It sparked a furious reaction from Germany as it tried to water down the 2035 phaseout. It’s not the only political backlash looming. The revamp of the Emissions Tradition System was passed despite fears it will spark a repeat of France’s Yellow Vests protests. Businesses worry that extending the ETS to buildings and transport could hurt economic growth and impact jobs — and politicians are listening. \n\n\n\nThe same applies to energy policies — the once comfortable view that the Continent could rely on natural gas and scorn nuclear as it made a gradual transition to renewables has been thrown out the window by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Now policy is being made on the fly as the bloc races to book more liquefied natural gas and France and its allies push a nuclear revival — all while balancing the bloc’s climate policy and a competitive challenge from China and the U.S. \n\n\n\nFrom November 14 to 16\, POLITICO Live is hosting its fifth annual Sustainability Future Week in Brussels where our reporters and editors will interview key politicians\, scientists\, campaigners and business executives to dig into the growing political tensions around the EU’s energy and climate policies.

SUMMARY:High-level expert webinar: Internet Commons and Digital Sovereignty
DESCRIPTION:Digital Commons are among the core assets to pursue Europe’s Digital Sovereignty. Several initiatives and calls for actions are gaining traction\, striving to bring real benefits to individuals and organisations by ensuring open\, inclusive and decentralised access to digital resources in line with the core principles and action of the Next Generation Internet (NGI) Initiative. However\, in order to ensure that such approaches can grow and become viable alternatives over the current concentration of Internet resources\, it is crucial to pull resources. Therefore\, policymakers\, regulators\, public authorities and all other relevant players in the internet arena must converge to define collaboration policies and targeted institutional and financial plans to guarantee interoperability and community governance. \nThe main objectives of the webinar:\n \n\nDiscuss priorities for Europe to support an open\, free\, global\, interoperable\, reliable\, and secure Internet.\nExplore the latest evolution of Digital Commons initiatives and relevant European policy-driven efforts.\nDiscuss the role of the Next Generation Internet initiative as a way to foster Digital Commons and European Digital Sovereignty.\nIncrease collaboration among all European players at work on Internet Commons.\n\nThe webinar will be moderated by Dr Monique Calisti\, NGI Outreach Office Director.
